After having the world famous spicy crayfifi sh, you shall never miss another famous crayfish in Hunan, and that is the shrimp painted by Grandpa Qi Baishi.

吃完了闻名全国的麻辣小龙虾，湖南还有一只驰名中外的虾，那就是齐白石嗲嗲的虾。

Why are Qi Baishi’s shrimps so amazing? He used the transparentizing ink color to show the crystal-clear body of the shrimp, and delicate brushwork to depict the whiskers and long-arm pliers. That’s why his shrimps look even more vivid and alive than the real ones.

齐白石画的虾到底绝在哪里？他笔下的虾子，既用浸润之色显出虾体晶莹剔透，一只只活灵活现，又以精细的笔法描绘虾须和长臂钳，神韵飞扬，看起来比真的还要真，还要活！

Qi Baishi is not only famous for his shrimps. The little insects, chickens, vegetables, radishes, flowers and grasses in his works are fresh, lively and lifelike, and are endowed with ethereal charm that goes beyond the painted objects, combining and striking a balance between sparseness and denseness, fine brushwork and freehand brushwork, dynamism and stillness. He also innovated the painting techniques by using more lines instead of using texturing methods to show the great fun in daily objects, giving his painting a combination of both the vibe of mundane life and artistry.

其实，齐白石不仅画虾有名，他笔下的小虫小鸡、青菜萝卜、花花草草，既新鲜活泼、栩栩如生，又带上了超脱实体的飘逸神韵，疏与密、工笔与写意、动与静相结合，多以线勾勒，少皴擦，大胆写意，小小的一方天地里却有大大的趣味，让他的画烟火味中带着一股股仙气。

So maybe that’s why when Picasso came to China , he complimented that “Qi Baishi is really an amazing painter in China. His paintings are so gorgeous. The fish painted by Qi Baishi is colorless, but it makes people see the river and the fish swimming in it.” Yu Qiuyu, a famous cultural researcher and writer in China, said that “Qi Baishi’s achievements come from his motherland and benefit from his own natural characteristics. His paintings are full of peasants’ simplicity and children’s innocence.”

所以，这可能也是为什么毕加索说：“齐白石真是一位了不起的中国画家！中国画师多神奇呀，齐白石用水墨画的鱼儿没有上色，却使人看到长河与游鱼。”余秋雨说：“大地赋予了齐白石至高的艺术成就，而齐白石的性格与‘天趣’密切，他有着农民般的朴实和孩童般的天真……”

Qi Baishi’s paintings have opened a window for us and allowed us to transcend time and space to eat lychees, drink wine, admire the moon, watch shrimps, and savor the joy of life with this man who is like both an immortal and a young child. After him, many masters of art have emerged in Hunan. Here, we have Huang Yongyu, the “old urchin” from western Hunan, who ispassionate about life and expresses his love for life with strong ink and color. From his paintings, we can see “vitality of life”. Here, we have Li Zijian, a painter travelling in the United States, who is famous for his oil paintings such asNanjing Massacre, Hometownseries, andMother and Daughterseries. The Li Zijian Art Museum established by him not only provides young artists with an opportunity to show themselves, but also strives to make Changsha an art capital of the central China. There are also many names, like Wang Chen, Shen Han, Cang Ya, Xiao Junxian, Zhou Jiayun, the three brothers of Lei’s, Zeng Xi, Chen Shizeng, and Chen Shaomei … Although these names are not so well-known as Qi Baishi, they are also an important part in the art world of Hunan painting and calligraphy. With the rise of this central art capital, the charm of Hunan painting and calligraphy will gradually be known to the whole world.

齐白石的画仿佛一扇窗，让我们得以跨越时空，和这位既仙风道骨但又充满人间烟火味的老嗲嗲一起吃荔枝、喝酒、赏月、看虾，品味生活的乐趣。而继他之后，湖湘大地上又涌现出许多艺术大师：有活泼热辣，以浓墨重彩表现对生活的热爱的湘西“老顽童”黄永玉，从他的画中，我们可以看到一种“生命的热闹”；有以油画《南京大屠杀》、《乡土》系列、《母女》系列闻名的旅美画家李自健，他开办的李自健美术馆不仅为青年画家提供了展示自己的机会，也推动长沙成为中部地区的艺术之都。从王宸到沈翰，再到苍崖、萧俊贤，再到周家畇、雷氏三兄弟、曾熙、陈师曾，最后到陈少梅等，虽然这些名字不那么为人所熟知，但也为湖湘书画发展留下了浓墨重彩的一笔。而湖南书画的魅力，也将随着艺术之都的崛起，渐渐走向世界。
